MY IDEAL WORLD OF STREAMERS

There are about 6,500 languages spoken worldwide. When streamers talk about diversity and inclusion, we have to consider that they have only major languages available on their platforms. But what about my grandma who cannot watch streamers as she is from an indigenous community of the country of Georgia. Her only language is Georgian. When I watch TV shows I always think about my parents and how they should love the show I am watching but there is no way they understand it in English. As their language skills are so tight. Most of the Georgian young generation leave the country and they use to speak better in other languages than Georgian, and I am so worried it happens everywhere. Not to mention that Russian is often mistaken for a native language of Georgia… We have our own language and our own culture, which has to survive from this globalization and immigration process.

Let’s imagine that streamers start more localization projects and they open their offices in every country, which is 195 worldwide. So, 195 offices are not too much. 

Let’s take the example of the country of Georgia. The population is 3,7 mln. If streamers translate films into Georgian, they will get Georgian subscribers. Dubbing a feature in local language is easy: you once dub/subtitle it and it exists forever. But for TV shows you will definitely need local stuff. Need to mention the price for dubbing is quite reasonable locally.

With the estimations below we can think that if NETFLIX will start dubbing in the country of Georgia it can reach 1 mln. subscribers potentially, which can balance the dubbing costs of the entire NETFLIX content by half of its local annual subscription revenue. For the next year it will give NETFLIX an opportunity to open the local office, which will be a great opportunity for local talents to work there. It gives NETFLIX an opportunity to produce local film/TV content for global outreach. 

What we nowadays talk about successful content for streamers, we consider local projects from around the world such as “Squid Game”, “Money Heist”, etc. so opening new offices in every country and creating local content with local languages will be a gate opener of diverse talents.

Localization projects and creating more local content will help the film market and economy to grow, it may become the new era of the entire cinema.

I see the future of the film, and it is brighter and more diverse than it is today.
